How to Do a UX Audit
A practical methodology to uncover user experience issues and prioritise them by business impact
A UX audit is a systematic evaluation of a digital product to identify usability, accessibility and experience issues that affect business goals. It is not an opinion on whether the design "looks good" — it is an analysis grounded in data, proven heuristics and actual user behaviour.
This guide walks through the process step by step: from scoping to delivering a report with prioritised recommendations. Whether you run it internally or bring in an external team, following a structured methodology is what separates a wishlist of complaints from an actionable improvement plan.
What is a UX audit and when should you do one?
A UX audit combines heuristic analysis (expert evaluation against established principles), quantitative data analysis (analytics, heatmaps, conversion funnels) and qualitative analysis (usability tests, interviews). The goal is to produce an objective diagnosis of the current state of the experience and a prioritised improvement plan.
The most common triggers for a UX audit are: before a redesign (to avoid repeating mistakes), when conversion metrics drop with no clear explanation, when the support team reports recurring negative feedback, or when the product has grown organically without a coherent UX vision.

Step 1: Define scope and objectives
Auditing an entire product at once is rarely efficient. The most effective approach is to narrow the focus: which flows are critical to the business? Where are complaints or drop-offs concentrated? An ecommerce site should prioritise the full purchase flow (search → product → cart → checkout). A SaaS platform should focus on onboarding and the most frequent tasks.
Set objectives with concrete metrics. "Improve the experience" is not measurable. "Reduce checkout abandonment from 68% to 50%" is. "Get 80% of users through onboarding without contacting support" is too. These objectives will guide how you prioritise your findings.
Step 2: Gather quantitative data
Before evaluating anything subjectively, collect real behavioural data. Google Analytics 4, Mixpanel or Amplitude reveal where users drop off, which pages have the highest bounce rates, and how long they spend on each step of a flow. Heatmaps from Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity show where they click, how far they scroll and what they ignore.
Pay special attention to conversion funnels: every step that loses a significant percentage of users is a priority candidate for the audit. If 40% abandon between cart and checkout, that step warrants detailed analysis. If a landing page has a 70% bounce rate, something is failing in the first five seconds.

Step 4: Usability testing

What matters is defining realistic tasks, recruiting participants who represent your target audience, and analysing results without confirmation bias.
